The government has drawn attention towards introducing electrically operated lifts and a cable car service at the Sigiriya Fortress for the convenience of local and foreign tourists for promotion of tourism. These will be introduced without causing any harm to the archaeological site, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said. He said this when he toured Dambulla, Ibbankatuwa and Sigiriya to participate in several events on February 11.
The minister who visited the Dambulla Cave Temple on an inspection tour saw that the murals at the temple were facing danger and instructed officials to launch a programme to conserve the murals. Thereafter the minister launched the conservation programme to be undertaken jointly by the Central Environmental Authority and the Archaeology Department. Kariyawasam also opened the renovated and conserved Ibbankatuwa pre-historic (megalithic) cemetery which is a tourist attraction. The minister later opened the new tourist ticket issuing centre at Sigiriya.
Tourists can also book tickets online under the new facility.
