Aitken Spence Travels conducted a webinar titled Sri Lanka the Wildlife wonder of Asia with an eminent resource panel on Monday 29th June 2020. The webinar was organized by Aitken Spence Travels and Co-partnered by Aitken Spence Hotels. This was the first time a webinar of this nature was done by Travels, for the companies tour operators, agents, the front-line staff, inhouse staff and the public as the event was on FB live streaming as well.
The panel consisted of Dr. Asha de Vos who is a Sri Lankan marine biologist, ocean educator and pioneer of blue whale research within the northern Indian Ocean. She is known for her Blue Whale Project and covered on the topic of ‘Whales & Marine life in the context of Tourism Promotion’. Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya who is an Environmental Scientist with over 25 years of experience working in Asian countries in the environment and wildlife conservation sector covered the topic of ‘Elephants of Sri Lanka’. Ms. Anjali Watson who is an ecologist whose work includes examining the factors that underlie the island-wide distribution and mortality of the Sri Lankan leopards. She has also worked with primates in South America and Sri Lanka and worked alongside Andrew on his other carnivore research. She will cover ‘Leopards of Sri Lanka’
The webinar had over 600 participants who were actively involved with the panellist seeking answers for questions posed. As the main theme was centred around wildlife some of the participants included a few schools, students and wildlife enthusiast too joining the session.
According to Dr. Pilapitiya Yala and Wilpattu are among the best places in the world to see Leopards. Minneriya, Kaudulla and UdaWalawe are the best places to see large herds of Asian Elephants. Mirissa, Kalpitiya, Trinco are the best places in the world to see Blue whales & Sperm whales. Rain forests are a Global biodiversity hotspot; Now declared a natural World Heritage Site. All these can be experienced in a short time – fit within a tourist’s schedule making Sri Lanka the “Wildlife Wonder of Asia”.
