Aitken Spence Travels wins Merit Award at the Presidential Environment Awards 2019

Aitken Spence Travels, the largest inbound tour operator in the country, was recently recognised for its innovative best practices in sustainable reporting, at the eighth annual “Presidential Environment Awards – 2019”. This award category is a first and newly introduced by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development & Environment, Sri Lanka.”

Having sustainability integrated within its core business, Aitken Spence Travels’ report covered details of the company’s social, environmental and financial management approach and performance. The company’s report for the year 2018/19 used the National Green Reporting System Sri Lanka, enabling a reader to clearly identify the company’s contribution and procedures to conduct sustainable tourism operations.

The awards ceremony was organised by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) and was held at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre under the patronage of former President Maithreepala Sirisena. This award programme acts as an additional measure to control environmental pollution and protect the environment. The Central Environmental Authority intends to use this programme to motivate innovation and to encourage higher participation for environmental protection and to achieve sustainable development.
