Govt approves two new airlines to operate to Sri Lanka; 5 more queued up

The Government has approved two more airlines to commence operations to Sri Lanka during the post Covid- phase, the Daily FT reported.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL) has approved Ethiopian Airlines and Maldivian Airlines to join the existing fleet of international airlines operating to Sri Lanka.

The two new airlines were approved from among six applications received by the CAASL.

The approval of the two new airlines has increased the number of registered carriers in Sri Lanka to nearly 40.

The CAASL said the approval of GoAir – an Indian low-cost airline; Sky Capital Airlines – a Bangladesh cargo airline; Jetsar – an Australian low-cost airline; Air Falcon – a cargo carrier from Pakistan; and Jazeera Airways from Kuwait is pending.

Stating that only eight international airlines and 15 charter carriers were operating to Sri Lanka following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Authority said as of January 2020 there were a total of 35 registered airlines.
