The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm together with the Sweden-Sri Lanka Business Council organised two events in Luleå on 3 and 4 March to promote Sri Lanka tourism and investment opportunities. Luleå is the capital of Norrbotten County, which is home to many companies engaging in high tech research and manufacturing industries.

On 3 March, the first flight of the charter flight operator TUI departed for Sri Lanka with 250 passengers. The TUI charter flight operator arranges majority of travel groups from Sweden to Sri Lanka. Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Sweden Sudantha Ganegama Arachchi was at the Luleå airport to greet the passengers and crew members. He was accompanied by the Mayor of Luleå to the tarmac to see off the TUI charter flight.

The County Governor Björn O. Nilsson hosted a dinner reception for the Ambassador. During the conversation, the Governor shared his interest to develop collaboration relating to advanced research between the institutions in the region and relevant Sri Lankan agencies. While appreciating the Governor’s interest, Ambassador Ganegama Arachchi agreed to explore the possibilities of such collaborations for mutual benefit. At a breakfast meeting held on 4 March, Ambassador Ganegama Arachchi presented the investment opportunities in Sri Lanka to the members of the Norrbotten Chamber of Commerce.

The Ambassador highlighted how Swedish companies could play an important role in the ongoing development projects in the country. Commercial Secretary of the Embassy Yasoji Gunawardana made a presentation on the business opportunities available in Sri Lanka as well as the importance of Sri Lanka as a travel destination. Secretary-General of the Sweden-Sri Lanka Business Council Leif Ohlson facilitated the organisation of these two events.
