Premier blue-chip conglomerate John Keells is currently designing a 5-star hotel in Nuwara Eliya with an investment of approximately US$ 25 million.
“In terms of our portfolio, Nuwara Eliya is missing. In the medium term, it’s an important location on the round trip—the ‘Cinnamon Trail’ to complete the Cinnamon experience,” John Keells Group Deputy Chairman Ajit Gunawardena told Mirror Business. John Keells recently bought the 220-perch property off the Upper Lake Road to construct the hotel.
“It’s going to be around 120-130 rooms. We haven’t finalized anything yet because the hotel has to fit into our existing Cinnamon theme,” Gunawardena added.
He said that the construction would take around 2 years, which is expected to commence within next 6 months. Celebrated architect Channa Daswatte is designing the hotel.
The John Keells Group, through 11 properties, owns 2,166 rooms in Sri Lanka. The Group’s leisure sector posted a revenue of Rs.23.25 billion for the year ended March 2015, increasing from Rs.22.55 billion year-on-year.
The net profit was Rs. 4.86 billion, increasing from Rs.4.82 billion yearon-year.
