Travel Kindly – Project for orphaned baby elephant

The elephant transit home is located at the Udawalawa National Park which is located in the Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces, in Sri Lanka. This Elephant transit home is owned and managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation Sri Lanka. Lost & Orphaned baby elephants once found make their way to this transit home. Currently 40 baby elephants are housed and cared for at the kind home ‘Ath Athuru Sevana’.

These baby elephants need to be fed milk every 3 hours and on average consumes 40 liters of milk a day. Besides regular feeding they need to be cared for and monitored for any illnesses or injuries sustained in the jungle. Some may need treatment for wounds, abrasions, fractures, infections or even dehydration. These needs are met by an in-house hospital equipped with indoor and outdoor treatment areas, a surveillance system, staff monitoring systems, in-house veterinarians, trained keepers and guards.

The baby elephants are free to roam within the facility as they wish & can socialize and make friends with the other elephants in the care home. The orphanage maintains low human interactions with the elephants so that the elephants enjoy a natural environment.

The elephant transit home incurs a considerable cost to take care of these elephants and Aitken Spence Travels as a leading inbound travel agency has stepped forward to take full responsibility of adopting a baby elephant. The commitment will see the company being part of the growth of the baby elephant till it is freed to the wild as an adult.

The project KINDLY TRAVEL has been proposed to avail an opportunity to a visiting
tourist to be part of a sustainable travel project by contributing to the adoption of one of these baby elephants. Even though the contribution or donation will be a significantly small value, it will allow the baby elephant a life time of comfort.
The proposed act is also accepted by Born Free Foundation.
