The Central Expressway section from Mirigama to Kurunegala will be opened by mid-December 2020, Minister of Ports, Shipping and Highways Johnston Fernando said.
The minister told journalists in Kurunegala that the second phase of the 39.91 km long project, which will pass through Mirigama, Nakalagamuwa, Pothuhera and Dambokka and reach Kurunegala, is nearing completion.
This section has 12 bridges, 140 boulders and 42 culverts.
Compensation has already been paid for the lands that were acquired. Minister Fernando stated that compensation has been paid for 3,827 plots of private land and 783 plots of government land.
Although the relevant contracting companies had signed agreements to commence construction work in 2017 and end in 2019, the project got delayed due to its slow pace during the previous government’s time.
