Wetlands botanical garden opens in Sitawaka

A new wetlands botanical garden was declared open in Ilukovita, Sitawaka in Awissawella by Tourism and Sports Minister Navin Dissanayake on Wednesday.

Spreading over 150 acres of land in Ilukovita, these gardens will conserve the wetlands unique to the region. Addressing the crowd, Minister Navin Dissanayake recalled how his father had sought expert knowledge from Sri Lankan engineers for the colossal Mahaweli Development project, and it was commendable that similar dedication and expertise was seen in the botanical gardens.

He also promised to take necessary steps to improve the transport facilities to the area which were in need of repair and promote the botanical garden among the public to ensure benefits to the locals. The event was well attended.

  1. I went to the wetlands botanical garden – Ilukovita, Sitawaka in Awissawella on 25th December 2015 it is quite a nice place well arranged I thinke it can be developed to a higher level to get more attraction of tourist but the other side of the beauty is the ground staff specially “the entrance staff” doesn’t have good PR the way they treat guests are very poor ..pay your attention to this matter and make arrangements to give them a good uniform too …thanking you — Nuwan
