Tourism to be given prominence in SL

Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Affairs John Amaratunga said a massive programme was being implemented to give the Tourism industry the foremost place in the country. The industry has been ranked the second highest foreign income earner and he pointed out that it could be further improved with the use of the Mattala Airport.

The Minister said this at a press conference held at the Tourist Board auditorium.

Chairman of the Aitken Spence Group Harry Jayawardena added that a large scale hotel complex with 500 rooms is being constructed in Ahungalla.

The special guest at the occasion was International Hotel businessman Francisco Joss, who presently owns 120 large scale hotels around the world.

Mr. Joss said “Sri Lanka is a most attractive country. There is a peaceful environment prevailing island wide making it is easy to bring down tourists. We hope to construct large hotels island wide in addition to the hotel complex being constructed in Ahungalle at present.” Chairman of the tourist Board, Padi Vitarana was also present at the occasion.
