Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has presented a Cabinet memorandum on promoting aqua tourism.
This will mean that there will be tourism related infrastructure such as hotels and other facilities bordering on water related properties.
This proposal revolves round the building of water hotels and over water cabins near the Kalpitiya islands, according to Minister Ranatunga’s proposal.
It has also been observed that there has been scope for this type of operation in Maldives, Mauritius, Mexico, Vietnam, Cambodia and other European countries such as France, Germany and Switzerland to attract tourists by building and operating waterfront properties.
It has been noted by officials of the Tourism Ministry officials that in addition to Kalpitiya, there are suitable areas for aqua tourism in the Northern regions of Sri Lanka as well.
Aqua sports can also be promoted at these venues, the Minister has pointed out.
