A luxury retreat in Kabalana with delectable cuisine

Exuding rustic charm coupled with fine dining cuisine,  Cafe Ceylon is a boutique hotel and restaurant in Kabalana, Galle. Set on two acres of  palm tree filled land, this 120 year old property, once the home of a wealthy kerosine merchant comprises of two villas, one with three bedrooms, a living room, dining room and private courtyard while the other villa has two bedrooms, a living and dining room and a wonderful verandah. Tastefully decorated throughout, this former walauwwa has an irresistible charm and still retains many of its fine original features. Full of character, the villas are homely and are equipped with modern conveniences.

Located just off the main road on the landside, access to the beach is by crossing the road which is a mere one minute walk away. The beach is clean, sandy, picture perfect and offers one of the best surfing locations in the vicinity. Cafe Ceylon has extensive gardens which is ideal for kids to play in while the adults rest and relax.

A large open dining room with unrestricted views of the sprawling gardens offers the perfect place to enjoy the hotel’s fine cuisine. The restaurant serves mainly seafood which is all locally sourced and is absolutely fresh. Undeniably one of the best seafood restaurants in the area, Cafe Ceylon serves lobster, oysters, prawns and a variety of other seafood. Drawing on cross cultural culinary traditions the hotel offers everything from Sri Lankan preparations to Mediterranean and Asian flavoured cuisine. Currently led by a four star rated chef from Melbourne, German Dimaano, he offers guests a mouthwatering menu which goes beyond curry using locally sourced ingredients.

German’s philosophy of ‘beyond curry’ is evident in the menu at Cafe Ceylon. With the exception of olive oil, soy sauce and Chinese cooking wine, the produce is all local. German attempts to incorporate the island’s bountiful fresh produce with Western nuances while still retaining elements that are familiar in Sri Lankan cuisine.  Be it snake gourd, gotukola, mallum, coconut hearts or pol sambol, each dish has something that reminds the diner of Sri Lankan cuisine. Even the desserts use the best of Sri Lankan fruits married with kitul jaggery, fragrant spices and even kurakkan flour to give the diner a totally unique dessert menu.

Economically priced, Cafe Ceylon is homely, clean and comfortable. Perfect for a weekend away or as a stopover for a meal, you will certainly not be disappointed.
