Sri Lanka has secured yet another internationally reputed conference with the country winning the chance to host the Commonwealth Medical Association Congress in 2016, according to Vipula Wanigasekera CEO of Sri Lanka Convention Bureau, the State Facilitator for conferences under the Ministry of Economic Development.
The President of the Commonwealth Medical Association (CMA) who was the Chief Guest at the eHealth Sri Lanka 2014 conference held this week announced that the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Medical Association has selected Sri Lanka as the venue for its Congress in 2016. Although 2016 was the turn of an African country to host the Congress, the CMA Executive Committee, decided to award it to Sri Lanka taking into consideration the strong bid made by the Sri Lanka Medical Association backed by the Ministry of Health and the Chair in Office of the Commonwealth President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The SLMA’s bid was not only comprehensive to benefit the participants in terms of the subject matter but also presented details of new developments in the country from tourism perspective. The Bidding process was led by the Past President, Prof. Vajira H.W. Dissanayake with a lot of hard work which was assisted by Sri Lanka Convention Bureau.
The SLMA’s strong commitment to promoting professionalism among the doctors in Sri Lanka and its commitment to development of health services in the country were commended by Dr. Sulaiman Juman in his keynote address yesterday. The Sri Lanka Medical Association, founded in 1887 is the oldest National Medical Association in Asia and Australasia. The eHealth Sri Lanka 2014 conference which was organised by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine of the University of Colombo in collaboration with the Commonwealth Medical Association, Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka, Asian eHealth Information Network, WHO and the UNICEF is the largest Health Informatics conference to be held in Sri Lanka. The conference is being webcasted around Asia through the Asian eHealth Information Network.
